 # Easy tricks to solve Ratio & Proportion related questions in REET examination!

Ratio & Proportion is termed to be as a very important part of any competitive examination, and the REET exam is no exclusion. It is a fairly simple concept, and if the candidates practice it well and have a clear understanding of its basics, they can clear it with much ease.

## Introduction to Ratio & Proportion

Ratio: The term Ratio undergoes showing the relation of one quantity with that of the other one. The definition of the same is “A ratio is a relationship between two numbers that define the quantity of the first in comparison to the second. This relation gives us how many times one quantity is equal to the other quantity. In simple words, the ratio is the number which is used to express one quantity as a fraction to the another.”

On the other hand, the term proportion is said as “Two varying quantities in a relation of proportionality if they are multiplicatively connected to a constant; i.e., when either their ratio or their product yields a constant. The value of this constant is called the coefficient of proportionality or proportionality constant.”

How to solve them?

The steps to solve the Ration and Proportion questions given below:

• The first step is to simplify the ratio, which is provided in the question. You can simplify a ratio by dividing both sides by the greatest common factor or HCF. Note that a ratio and its simplified form are equivalent fractions.
• The next step is to find the variable in the ratio. To find an unknown term in a ratio, we can write the ratios as fractions, and then cross-multiply and solve the resulting equation

## Examples

1. The two numbers are respectively 20% and 50% more than a third number. The ratio of the two numbers is:

Explanation:

Let the third number be x.

Then, first number = 120% of x =120x/100 = 6x/5

Second number =150% of x = 150x/100 = 3x/2

Ratio of first two numbers = 6x/5: 3x/2 = 12x : 15x = 4 : 5
